Your Permafrost Journey

Five simple steps to a strong start, whether you play solo or with friends.

Explore Permafrost Guides

Everything you need to survive, craft, build and explore the endless winter.

Permafrost Beginner Guide

Your first hours as Rook set the tone for the whole run. This guide walks through spawn choices, the very first tools to craft, how health, hunger, energy and stamina drain, and the mistakes that get new survivors killed before their first blizzard.

Start Reading
1

Start in Story mode with a background that fits your playstyle — Engineer adds bonuses to running, axes and toughness for a steady early game

2

Scavenge your immediate area for wood, stone and basic cloth before moving — you need a fire and a simple tool kit within the first hour

3

Craft a stone axe, pickaxe and shiv early; a bow and arrows should follow once you have scrap and fiber

4

Watch cold resistance and the weather forecast — storms and night drop temperatures fast, so plan shelter before you travel far

5

Repair or build a shelter with a bed and fire before pushing into higher-tier zones, and always carry spare food for the trip back

6

Use the dog companion's pack to extend your hauling range on scavenging runs into cold zones

Permafrost Cold Survival

The cold is alive and ever-present in Permafrost. Learn how frostbite, storms, fog and the chill system work, and how clothing, fires, beds and shelters stack to keep your body temperature safe through the long winter nights.

Survive Better
1

Check your cold resistance before every trip — clothing sets your survivable temperature range, so dress for the zone you are entering

2

Keep a fire source and warm shelter between activities; standing in the open drains body temperature even when the weather looks calm

3

Plan travel in weather windows — storms and fog cut visibility and drop temperatures, so wait them out inside whenever possible

4

Treat frostbite immediately with warm shelter and rest; ignoring status effects snowballs into hypothermia and death

5

Sleep or rest in a bed to recover, especially at night when temperatures are low enough to make outdoor work impractical

6

Hunt boars and wolves for food, but check wildlife aggression — a wolf pack in low gear can end a scavenging run

Permafrost Base Building

Progress in Permafrost is exploration-gated: you restore abandoned shelters, repair broken machines and build a network of safe houses. This guide covers building parts, heating, storage and the best early base locations for surviving blizzards.

Plan Your Base
1

Claim an existing shelter early — repairing walls, a door and a fire costs far less than building from scratch

2

Place a bed and campfire first: warmth and rest anchor every other base activity

3

Add storage boxes to stockpile wood, stone, scrap, food and medicine for expeditions

4

Build or repair walls and doors to block weather and hostile factions from your supplies

5

Set up checkpoints and small outposts between shelters so long trips always end near warmth

6

Upgrade heating as you push into colder zones — high-tier areas demand better gear and warmth before building

Permafrost Dog Companion

A rescued dog is more than company — it scouts ahead, warns of danger, carries supplies in its pack, gathers resources and guards your camp. Learn which breeds appear, the commands you can use and how to manage your companion in co-op.

Meet the Dogs
1

Rescue the dog early in the story — it becomes a permanent companion with a pack inventory for extra carry weight

2

Use call and stay commands to position the dog, especially when entering hostile or cold zones

3

Send the dog to gather resources while you scout — its pack extends your effective looting range

4

Let the dog stand guard at camp to warn against wolves, raiders and other threats

5

Watch the weather — the dog endures outdoor conditions, so factor it into long expeditions

6

Different breeds (such as the Border Collie) offer different utility; check your pickup for stats and abilities

Permafrost Co-op & Multiplayer

Play solo, or team up with up to three friends: the cold does not care how many of you there are. This module covers joining games, hosting, progress sharing, roles for a co-op squad and the common connection issues to expect in Early Access.

Play Together
1

Host or join a friend's game from the main menu — co-op supports up to four players over online sessions

2

Divide roles: one player gathers crafting materials while another scouts and hunts, then meet back at base

3

Share blueprints and resources — co-op does not make the world easier, it only means you do not face the cold alone

4

Build a shared shelter network so every squad member has a warm fallback during storms

5

Confirm host save and progress behavior before long sessions to avoid losing a world

6

If you cannot connect or hit lag spikes, check hosting region and Early Access server status in Discord

Permafrost Gear & Items

Clothing sets your survivable temperature range; tools and weapons decide what you can hunt, gather and defend. This module ranks the gear tiers, clothing layers and weapons you should aim for as you push into colder, higher-tier zones.

What is Permafrost?

Permafrost is a story-driven open-world survival sandbox set on a near-future Earth trapped in an endless, brutal winter. After the Shattering — a lunar catastrophe that buried the planet under ice and snow — you play as Rook, an engineer with rebuilding skills but little wilderness instinct, chasing a radio signal from a long-lost friend.

Cold Survival

Frostbite, blizzards and creeping chill shape every expedition. Dress for the zone, plan around weather windows and keep your body temperature safe.

Stay Warm

Clothing sets your survivable temperature range; fires, beds and shelters stack to keep you safe through storms and freezing nights.

Craft & Repair

Collect resources, unlock blueprints found in the world, and turn them into tools, clothing and gear. Repair and reclaim lost technology.

Dog Companion

A rescued dog scouts ahead, warns of danger, carries supplies in its pack and guards your camp — the best buddy in the frozen wastes.

1-4 Co-op

Team up with up to three friends. Co-op does not make the world easier — it only means you do not face the cold alone.

Explore the Waste

Frozen cities, buried forests, caves and cold zones hide the best loot behind progressively harsher environments.

The cold is the true enemy: frostbite, blizzards and creeping chill shape every expedition. Explore frozen cities and wilderness, hunt scarce wildlife, scavenge resources, craft tools from discovered blueprints, and restore abandoned shelters to push deeper into a world that grows harsher with every step. Play solo or with up to three friends in online co-op, where a rescued dog companion scouts ahead, warns of danger, carries supplies, and keeps you grounded.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stay warm in Permafrost?+

Warmth comes from three layers that stack: clothing sets your survivable temperature range, campfires and stoves provide a heat source, and beds plus enclosed shelters let you rest safely through the coldest hours. Always check your cold resistance before a trip and plan travel in weather windows — storms and night drop temperatures fast.

What happens if I get frostbite?+

Frostbite is a status effect that appears when your body temperature drops too far. It slowly damages health and lowers your effective resistance, and ignoring it can snowball into hypothermia. Treat it immediately by moving to warm shelter, standing by a fire and resting in a bed until the effect clears.

Where do I find blueprints?+

Blueprints are discovered in the world rather than bought: you find them in abandoned cities, buried forests, caves and other landmarks, often near story clues or inside lootable structures. Once collected, the recipe stays unlocked and you can craft the item whenever you have the materials.

What does the dog companion do?+

A rescued dog scouts ahead, warns of approaching danger, carries supplies in its pack inventory, can gather resources and will guard your camp while you work. You give it call and stay commands, and in co-op every player can use the companion. Different breeds offer different utility.

How does co-op work?+

Permafrost supports 1-4 player online co-op. One player hosts from the main menu and friends join their game. Co-op does not make the world easier — enemies and weather are the same — but you share blueprints, resources and shelter networks, so you simply do not face the cold alone.

When will Permafrost leave Early Access?+

Permafrost launched into Steam Early Access on October 9, 2026 with a plan for at least 12 more months of development. The roadmap promises new biomes, quests, NPCs and vehicles before version 1.0; the full release is not yet dated, and the price is expected to rise at 1.0.

Ready to Master Permafrost?

The frozen world is waiting — and it never forgives a bad plan. Start with the essentials and turn the endless winter into your home turf.
